Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Immigration officers surrounded the Ocean Chinese takeaway in Chandler’s Ford after receiving a tip-off that a man and a woman were working at the business in Falkland Road illegally.
<p>Six officers wearing stab-vests blocked the exits and searched the property
during the lunchtime and interviewed employees.</p>
<p>After finding forged documents, immigration officers arrested a man and woman
from Malaysia and they were taken to an immigration detention centre.</p>
<p>The pair have now been fingerprinted to prevent them returning to the UK illegally.</p>
<p>Tony Smith, from the Border and Immigration Agency, warned business owners
that any boss found to be employing people illegally faced the threat of prosecution
He said: "We will not tolerate illegal working. That’s why the Border and
Immigration Agency is investing more money in enforcement and forging ever closer
links with the police. Illegal working is unfair on honest employers who recruit
staff with the right to work in the UK and who pay them a proper salary."</p>
<p>The operation took place last Wednesday but details have just been released
by the immigration agency.</p>
<p>It comes as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal workers. Anyone with
any information about businesses in Hampshire are urged to call Crimestoppers
anonymously on 0800 555 111.</p>
