Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The union in a statement praised the government for disallowing bus opera-
tors from outsourcing their vehicles to private indivi-duals.

It said permits and licen-ces issued by the Commer-cial Vehicle Licensing Board
(CVLB) were exclusive to the applicants and thus must only be used by the operators.

It added that other states and the Federal Government must follow suit in en-
suring that only those issued permits and licences were allowed to operate the
buses.

The TWU also wants the Federal Government to allocate a bigger budget to im-prove
the country’s public transport system.

“The government can re-duce taxes payable by public transport operators,
pro- vide subsidised fuel and help operators to buy new buses to replace the
older ones which are no longer roadworthy,” the statement said.
