Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) — Pakistani workers in Malaysia are being advised not to overstay, and to use proper channels in seeking for work in the country.
Its High Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Hassan Raza said they should respect the local laws and procedures.
He said a total of 400 Pakistan nationals had been sent home in the past 10 weeks (two and a half months) because of overstaying in Malaysia.
The move to send them home was carried out through the cooperation of the High Commission and the Malaysian Immigration Department, he told Bernama after visiting its headquarters here, today.
“Some Pakistan nationals come to Malaysia and after their visa expired, they survived by doing odd-jobs and this may cause a lot of problems in future. Please do not do this. Go back and come back using the proper channel and documentation,” he added.
During his visit to Bernama, Syed Hassan Raza had a brief discussion with the news agency’s Editor-in-Chief Datuk Zulkefli Salleh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Domestic News Service) Datuk Zakaria Abd Wahab and Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Foreign/International News Service) Ahmad Zukiman Mohd Zain.
Syed Hassan Raza also praised Malaysia for its unique multi-ethnic society, and was impressed with how Malaysians could unite and live with tolerance, harmony, as well as respect each other’s religion.
Touching on Bernama, he said both Malaysia’s and Pakistan’s media agencies could become a bridge to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of education, news and information, that would benefit both countries.
He also encouraged more Malaysian students to explore learning opportunities, especially in medical and dentistry courses in Pakistan.
In making this call, he said there were many good universities and colleges in Pakistan, which used to be popular among Malaysian students back in the 1980s.
“Every year in Pakistan, we have openings for foreign students from Muslim and developing countries, and we encourage Malaysian students to explore the opportunities. Our degrees are widely recognised in Malaysia and worldwide.
“We have a good set of experts and lecturers in medical and dentistry courses, as well as practical training. Although these courses are challenging, we (Pakistan) are ready to prepare these students to cope with the challenge,” he said. — BERNAMA
