Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Its general secretary, Hong Boon How, said the union was disappointed as the
management of both companies had not briefed their workers and the union on
the development that would effect their livelihood and future.
<p>"All corporate exercises should be done in a transparent manner with emphasis
on preserving the rights and benefits of workers.</p>
<p>"The current consolidation of media companies under a few hands is a worrisome
trend in Malaysia, as it would pose a threat to press freedom and objectivity,"
he said in a statement Friday.</p>
<p>Rumours on the proposed merger between Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd and media conglomerate
Kumpulan Media Prima Berhad had been circulating since early this week but there
has been no confirmation on the matter.</p>
<p>However, Utusan Melayu announced today that Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd had
approved its request for a suspension in trading of its securities pending an
announce on a material transaction on Dec 4.</p>
<p>Hong said the NUJ hoped that before any decision was made pertaining to any
form of change in ownership, company exercise or change in any policies, the
union should be consulted and the decision should be made on consensus.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, a PR firm, WestCoast Communications, today issued a press advisory
on behalf of NSTP and Utusan Melayu inviting the press for news conference scheduled
for 4.45pm on Dec 4 at the Royale Bintang Damansara.</p>
<p>According to the advisory, senior company officials from both the NSTP and
Utusan would be present at the news conference. – BERNAMA
