Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PETALING JAYA, Aug 31 (Bernama)– The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) on Sunday offered to cooperate with employers and the Labour Department to solve the grievances of foreign workers.
Its president, Khalid Atan, told Bernama that this would also help in maintaining industrial harmony in the country.
He was commenting on the alleged rioting by 800 Nepali workers at the JYC HDD Technology Sdn Bhd factory, Kelapa Sawit Industrial Estate in Johor early this week.
A similar incident also was reported at the company’s branch in Tebrau Industrial Park.
According to Khalid the MTUC had received complaints that the workers were allegedly ill treated and some of them were not paid their wages for four months.
However, Khalid said this did not mean that MTUC condoned insubordination or illegal rioting by employees, but instead always encouraged workers to “protect their rights through legal means.” — BERNAMA
