Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
In its annual «Trafficking
in Persons Report,» the U.S. State Department downgraded Malaysia to the
blacklist from a watch list, citing its failure to tackle the problem.

Malaysia
is placed on Tier 2 for its failure to show satisfactory progress in combating
trafficking in persons,» the report said, referring to the departments designation
for the blacklist. Blacklisted countries are subject to sanctions.

The report
cited the Malaysian governments failure to prosecute and punish traffickers, to
provide adequate shelters and services to victims, and to protect its migrant
workers from involuntary servitude.

Fifteen other countries were included
on the blacklist.

Source: http://www.pr-inside.com/malaysia-added-to-us-human-trafficking-r151658.htm
