Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said the attaches would come from the Labour Department.

The countries being considered are those which supply many of the foreign
workers in Malaysia such as Indonesia and Nepal.

“We are hoping these
labour officers will be dispatched as soon as possible,” he said after opening
the RM17.5mil Social Security (Socso) office here on Monday.

Dr Fong said
among the duties of such officers was to advise prospective foreign workers about
working conditions in Malaysia.

On another matter, Dr Fong said his ministry
was still awaiting approval from the Treasury to enable Socso to diversify its
investments to include taking up equity in commercial projects.

By law,
Socso currently could invest funds from its contributors in things like bonds
and fixed deposits.

Source: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/3/5/nation/20070305185735&sec=nation
