PETALING JAYA: National identity and the lack of unity are among concerns raised by young people under the 2050 National Transformation (TN50) initiative, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pic).
He said youths were concerned about issues which could tear the fabric of Malaysia’s multi-cultural society.
“We need to create a shared experience for young Malaysians as this doesn’t exist today owing to the different education streams,” said Khairy at a press conference at MyWin Academy.
He said among the radical ideas proposed during the TN50 dialogues was for every Malaysian child to undergo compulsory national service when they are 12, 15, and 17 years old.
He said the proposed programme would expose young Malaysians to a common experience which would be different from the current National Service Training Programme that was only applicable to school leavers.
The idea, he said, was among 50,000 collected so far under the TN50 initiative.
He said the second phase of TN50, to refine ideas before they are presented to the Government at the end of the year, was under way.
“We are now at the ‘Circles of the Future’ where some 200 youth representatives and mentors have begun holding in-depth discussions under their respective themes covering living and well-being, work and value creation, governance, lifestyle and society,” he said.
Khairy also announced that an open-day session would be held in early October where members of the public could provide feedback on the findings of the TN50 discussions.
He added that the Prime Minister would hold a final town-hall session before the recommendations were made into a final TN50 report.
