Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) — The Immigration Department will weed out irresponsible agents and middle men who are responsible for bringing in illegal immigrants into the country.
Its Director-general Datuk Mustafa Ibrahim said, parties involved in employing or harbouring these immigrants illegally should surrender themselves before the amnesty programme ends on Dec 31.
“The employers should voluntarily hand these immigrants to the immigration… their punishment will be reduced to a fine or the illegal immigrants repatriated to their country of origin,” he told reporters after an Integrated Ops here in Sentul Raya.
Monday night, an operation which lasted for two hours beginning 9pm, involved 104 officers and members from the Immigration Department Headquarters and Kuala Lumpur branch, Malaysia Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) whereby 178 foreigners were screened.
From the 178 screened, 53 were remanded for various reasons under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying.
“Those remanded comprised 35 Indonesians, Bangladeshis (16), one from Myanmar and an Indian.
