Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
MTUC has once again successfully organised an OSH National conference from 15 to 17th October 2019 at Mahkota Hotel in Malacca.
More that 80 leaders of unions from all over Malaysia participated in this important training including leaders from Sabah and Sarawak.
MTUC chose this theme considering the gap in identifying occupational diseases arising out of work in Malaysia.
The Conference was opened by Y.B. Dato’ Hj. Mahfuz bin Hj Omar other speakers at the opening session include Bro. Mohd Jafar Majid, Deputy President, Bro. Matkar Siwang Vice President and other MTUC general council members and leaders of affiliated unions.
The Deputy Minister during his speech informed the importance of identifying Occupational Diseases and informed the unions to play an important role with employers to assist their members and become the eyes and ears of the ministry to address Occupational Diseases in Malaysia.
The participants were informed and big gaps in identifying occupational diseases by Dr. Azlan Darus of SOCSO representing the CEO of PERKESO.
We invited several distinguished speakers from the Ministry of Health, SOCSO, DOSH, MEF, ACOSH, MSOSH and an independent Doctor who is also an Occupational Doctor.
It was informed at the conference that not many companies among the 1 Million companies registered in Malaysia have OHD as their panel clinics.
The MTUC OSH committee effectively facilitated this whole program and MTUC secretariat will certainly discuss the findings and recommendations adopted at the conference to ensure the MTUC OSH committee takes follow up action together with the MTUC leadership.
