Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
This included a proposal from Cuepacs that civil servants be paid 13 months’
salary a year, based on the fact that employees worked for 52 weeks a year but
were paid for only 12 months, which is 48 weeks.

Cuepacs organised a Workers Day rally yesterday at the Sultan Sulaiman Club
in Kampung Baru here, which was attended by some 500 government employees.

During the rally, the umbrella body for civil servants also voiced fears over
a proposed amendment for sweeping powers to be given to the director-general
of trade unions (DGTU).

Cuepacs also brought up the issue of the Assessment of Efficiency Level test,
suggesting that other alternatives to gauge a civil servant’s competence level
be used.

Meanwhile, the MTUC said it would work towards strengthening international
trade union solidarity in its bid to protect Malaysian workers from the onslaught
of globalisation.

The MTUC’s move to strengthen its links with its global peers was also aimed
at getting such firms here to commit that Malaysian workers would be fairly
treated in line with the International Framework Agreements.

In Penang, there was no mass gathering for workers unlike previous years.

Supermarkets and hypermarkets, however, took advantage of the long weekend
to hold a Labour Day sale and were packed with shoppers.

Hotels on the island also registered almost 100% occupancy.
