“Investment income from the various investment instruments registered
decreases due to lacklustre market performances and overall dip in confidence
levels following global issues such as rising oil prices,” EPF said in a statement.

It made less from government bonds, stocks and money market investments, the
fund said, without elaborating.

Total investment by the fund grew 9.7% in the first quarter from a year ago
to RM267bil.

As of March 31, 37% of the fund’s investments was in government bonds, 36%
in loans and bonds, 19% in stocks, 7.4% in money market instruments and 0.6%
in property.

EPF would seek higher-yielding investments “where the opportunity arises”
while exercising prudence to ensure minimum risks to the savings of its members,
chief executive officer Datuk Azlan Zainol was cited as saying.

Combined income for the three months was RM2.8bil, it said, without providing
year-ago figures. – Bloomberg
