Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) — Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Azih Muda today proposed for the government quarters to be renamed government rental house so that civil servants on Grade 44 and below can enjoy the full rate of housing allowance.
He said if the status of the quarters were changed, Cuepacs would propose for the monthly rental rate imposed on civil servants staying at the quarters to be fixed at RM124.
“Hence, there will be a balance of RM56 from their RM180 housing allowance. Besides, the maximum Cost of Living Allowance (Cola) of RM300 should also be paid to all civil servants regardless of their areas. There’s no reason for them to receive only 50 per cent of it,” he told a press conference after chairing Cuepacs meeting here today.
Azih said Cuepacs also called on the government to review hotel rates and travel allowance for civil servants as the current rates and allowance were no longer relevant in today’s situation.
In another development, he said this year’s Workers’ Day celebration on May 1 would be held at Dewan Wawasan Jitra, Kedah with the theme ‘Penjawat Awam Tiang Seri Negara’.
He said the theme was chosen in line with the roles and functions of civil servants in helping the government to develop the country. — BERNAMA
