Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
JOHOR BAHARU, June 27 (Bernama) — Three foreign workers were killed and another injured when a wall near the drain they dug collapsed on them today.
Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department Operations Chief Mohamad Anwar Mohd Amdzah said the workers were digging a drain for a factory still under construction at Jalan Angkasa Emas, Johor Jaya.
He said the Fire and Rescue Department received a call at 8.36am and arrived at the scene at 8.47am.
“The two Indonesians killed were Sairin, 44, and Abu Kassim, 41, and Bangladeshi Ripoon Mioh, 27,” he told Bernama today.
The injured worker, and Indonesian, has yet to be identified but has been sent to the nearest hospital for treatment, said Mohamad Anwar.
He said the four-foot drain was believed to have caused a nearby wall to become unstable before it collapsed and crashed onto them.
“The first victim was pulled out from the debris at about 10.20am, followed by the others a while later,” he said.
According to Mohamad Anwar, 20 firemen including those from Johor Baharu were rushed to the scene where they received help from several other foreign workers who were also in the area.
Construction of other infrastructure at the factory is currently being stopped temporarily, he added. — BERNAMA
