Charged with employing illegals

SEPANG: A bakery operator was charged in the sessions court here yesterday with employing 19 undocumented foreigners.
Hamdam Ismail, 45, claimed trial to employing 18 Indonesians and one Bangladeshi, who allegedly did not possess work permits, at Kedai Kek Harissa in Taman Pinggiran USJ 1/11, Subang Jaya in Selangor at 4.40pm on May 23.
He was charged under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002), that carries a jail term of six months and not more than six strokes of the cane under Section 55B(3) of the same Act.
Judge Saiful Akmal Mohd Said set bail at RM43,000 in two sureties and fixed Aug 8 for remention.
The court also impounded Hamdam’s passport and ordered him to report to the Immigration Department enforcement division office in Shah Alam once a month.
Prosecuting officer Norzam Suhada Abdull Wahab appeared for the Immigration Department while counsel Zaflee Pakwanteh represented the accused.
