Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between MTUC, represented by Bro J Solomon, MTUC Secretary-General, Bro K Soma, Assistant Secretary of Education, Bro Rudy, SEL / KL MRC Officer, MTUC General Council Member and Bro Zul Thye, Coordinator of MTUC MRC and Confederation of Myanmar Trade Unions (CTUM) have been successfully sealed at Wisma MTUC and witnessed by several members of the affiliates union of MTUC. CTUM was represented by Mr Pyi Thit Nyunt Wai @ Maung Maung, CTUM President, Sis Htwe Htwe Thein, Director of CTUM Migration Department, Bro Aung Kyaw Myint, Assistant Director of the CTUM Migration Department and Bro Hein Latt, CTUM Migrant Department Officer.
Among the agreements agreed upon in the memorandum are the exchange and sharing of information and news on labor laws between the two countries, namely Malaysia-Myanmar, providing training to Myanmar migrant workers, handling case management involving Myanmar migrant workers, campaigns for Myanmar migrant workers become union members in line with the sectors they work, including promoting safe and fair migration.
Bro J Solomon, MTUC Secretary-General, said, with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, cooperation between these two labor centers could be enhanced for the safety and improvement of the situation of Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia. He also hoped that all planned activities would be assisted and facilitated with assistance from the ILO and also the ITUC AP.
This will enable Myanmar workers to be a union member which will further increase the union membership in this country.
