Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
A total of 77 undocumented immigrants were detained for various offences by the Immigration Department during a raid under the E-Card Ops Mega at a construction site in Port Dickson last night.
Immigration deputy director-general (Operations) Jaafar Mohamed led the two-hour operation which ended at 12.30am today and involved 148 immigration officers from Putrajaya and Negeri Sembilan.
Jaafar said the undocumented immigrants were among 185 foreigners rounded up during the operation at a workers’ quarters at Splash Park Batu 12 in Pasir Panjang.
The immigrants detained comprised 15 Bangladeshi nationals, 60 Indonesians, a Nepalese and a Pakistani, aged between 25 and 60, he told reporters after the operation.
Jaafar said the immigrants were detained for offences that included not having valid working permits and overstaying.
