Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
“According to the information was provided to us by the immigration department
of Malaysian government, the incident took place on Friday,” said Hari
Kumar Shrestha, charge d’affaires at the Nepali embassy. “We were told
that their employer company made the request for the arrest."
<p>However, Malaysian authorities declined to disclose the name of the employer
company. “We expect additional details by Wednesday,” said Shrestha.
Malaysian government has of late intensified crackdown on illegal immigrants
and those evolved in illegal activities.</p>
<p>"We receive at least two or three cases of arrests involving Nepalis,"
said he.</p>
<p>Around 150 Nepali workers are now languishing in five detention centers in
Malaysia, he stated.</p>
