Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
MTUC in collaboration with ILO ACTRAV/ITUC-AP organised a 3 Days National Seminar on Trade Union Development and Labour Law Reform from 19-21 March 2019 at NUBE Training Center, Port Dickson.
The objectives of the seminar is to develop plans on the future development of trade union movement in Malaysia in anticipation of the LLR.
All participants will share their experiences and expectations with in respect to developing the Unions in Malaysia.
Discussions will be like Union Restructuring, Amalgamation, Organizing and Collective Agreement.
MTUC is proud to have the presence of YB Tuan Kulasegaran, Minister of Human Resource to officiate the seminar despite his tight schedule accompanied by the senior officers from various departments of the Ministry of Human Resource.
The entire workforce in Malaysia is grateful that the initiative taken by the Hon Minister YB Kula is going to change the entire landscape of the workers in Malaysia for the better after more than 60 years of independence.
The participants were inspired by the Hon Minister’s caring speech for the workers in the country and thanked the Unions for the important role in developing Malaysia.
The Hon Minister YB Kula also took time to meet some union leaders who sought the assistance of the Minister on their disputes with their respective management.
MTUC is also grateful that Bro Felix Anthony, the President of ITUC AP has also taken the effort to attend this important event in view of the LLR and was eager to share with the leaders of MTUC in developing the trade unions in Malaysia.
Bro Felix emphasised on the importance of organising and the need for trade union leaders to work together in benefitting from the labour law reforms.
Mr Raghwan and Sis Christine Senior Specialist from ILO Actrav is conducting the 3 days programme. Both of them has been in ILO Bangkok office for many years before leaving to other assignments and they fully understand the development of trade unions in Malaysia.
Dato Halim Mansor welcomed everyone and assured that MTUC will play an important role in this LLR so that the workers could benefit from the fruits of the LLR.
Bro J Solomon, Secretary Geneal of MTUC, Bro Mohd Jaafar, Deputy President of MTUC, MTUC General Council members and more than 80 leaders of the affiliated unions are attending the seminar.
