Workshop on Trade Union Capacity Building and Technical Assistance
MTUC in collaboration with the Solidarity Center and also the Sarawak Division MTUC organize a Workshop on Trade Union Capacity Building and Technical Assistance held in Kuching Sarawak. Bro Wilibordus Balawala from Solidarity Center attended the workshop. Among the representatives of the Sarawak MTUC Sarawak were Sarawak MTUC Sarawak Secretary-General Bro Andrew Lo and Bro Haji Ibrahim, Chairman of the MTUC Sarawak as the master of the ceremony. A total of 27 participants comprising 16 male and 11 female participants from various unions attended the workshop. The workshop was conducted by facilitators from MTUC Headquarters Bro Zul Thye and Bro Rudy.
The purpose of the workshop was to enhance the knowledge and experience of union officials in managing their respective unions. This is the best platform for all union officers to ask questions or views during the workshop. In addition, attendees are encouraged to highlight the required technical assistance from MTUC Center and Solidarity Center. This will be done through group work for the participants and will be presented at the end of the workshop.
Bro Haji Ibrahim started the workshop by giving all the participants a warm welcome and giving an objective explanation of the workshop. He hoped that all participants would be able to focus and work well together to continue to participate in all the group work to be held.
Bro Zul Thye has presented and explained the functions and role of the MTUC Center in establishing a Services Center to assist all workers including migrant workers and migrant domestic workers. Statistics on issues in case management have also been presented.
Bro Law KM as well as Bro Abang Razali Abang Salleh of MTUC Sarawak presented the topic on trade union leadership. Various information and tips on effective workforce management have been described. Knowledge of the functions and problems that occur within a union organization has been clearly explained for the understanding of the participants. The quality required as a leader should be demonstrated by the effectiveness of management where clear and fair objectives can be communicated to union members.
Bro Rudy has presented effective organizing methods using the concept of power mapping and SWOT Analysis. The correct way of organizing with the use of ITUC Organizing model has been clearly explained. In addition, a group work was conducted to find out what the participants’ contributions to their unions were and what things could not be possible when working with unions. The lessons learned in both cases were also expressed by participants. The next group work is for participants to provide a presentation of the campaign plan for each group.
