Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
13th May 2020.
Wisma Sumber Asli, Putrajaya.
MTUC had a meeting today with the Secretary General of the Kementerian Tanah dan Sumber Asli Ybhg. Datuk Zurinah Binti Pawanteh and her officials. This was furtherance to a request by MTUC on 8th May for an urgent meeting in respect to the promised quarters for the workers at the Malaysian Zoological Society which was not honoured by the Management since 2001.
The Government has expanded RM 1.6 million in 2001 to the Malaysian Zoological Society in 2001 and since then the Management has given various excuses for not delivering the promise.
We are thankful that the Ministry has promptly called us for the meeting despite the MCO and the meeting was chaired by the Secretary General to whom we were able to brief our grouses.
Ybhg Datuk Zurinah was very attentive to our issues and advised us to submit to the Ministry on our needs for the Ministry to make a decision as the RM 1.6 million belongs to the government and it is the responsibility of the Ministry that the money expanded by the government is to be used for the intended purposes and wisely.
The Union leaders representing KPPMZS took the opportunity to submit their concerns of the workers and the animals in the Zoo to the Ministry.
MTUC thanked the Ministry for the meeting which commenced at 1.45pm and ended at 3.15 pm.
