Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Club Employees Union Peninsular Malaysia (RPGC branch) chairman S. Ghanesen said 115 workers had received termination letters effective Feb 28. The RPGC is now run by RPGC Bhd, a public company formed under State Secretary Incorporated.
<P>Ghanesen
said the workers were given the option to join RPGC Bhd. “But we are unhappy
with the terms of employment. About 40% of the 115 workers have been re-hired
with pay cuts between 20% and 25% and a six-month probationary period. </P><P>He
said the CA expires on December, 31, 2008 and the union had forwarded their grievances
to the management but had yet to obtain any favourable reply. </P><P>The union’s
general secretary, Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, said he would be filing a case at
the Industrial Court next week if the matter remained unresolved.</P><P><I>Source:
