Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said the employers must show proof that they had advertised with the labour exchange set up by Human Resource Ministry.
<p>"If proven that there has been no response from locals within that period,
then the employers can apply to employ foreign workers and their applications
will be considered by a committee," he told reporters at a Deepavali open
house of former MIC deputy president Datuk Datuk S. Subramaniam here tonight.</p>
<p>He said the approval would take two weeks.</p>
<p>Radzi said it was estimated that each year, some 270,000 foreign workers returned
to their countries of origin, most after staying in Malaysia for three years.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, he added, the Economic Planning Unit under the Prime Minister’s
Department was currently conducting a study on the number of foreign workers
required by each sector in the country.</p>
