KEMAMAN: State Immigration Department enforcement officers rounded up 34 illegal immigrants during a joint operation at a construction site near the Kerteh Industrial area, here, today.
Enforcement chief Mohd Muda said a team of officers from the Immigration Department were involved in the operation led by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), which also included the Health Department, RELA, Kemaman Municipal Council, and Civil Defence Department.
Mohd Muda said all the detainees aged between 22 and 40 were arrested under various sections of the Immigration Act.
He said 21 Bangladeshis, six Indonesians, three Myanmar nationals, three Pakistanis and a Nepalese were nabbed during the operation.
Six were detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the rest were being investigated under Section 39(b) of the same Act.
Meanwhile the state’s CIDB manager Siti Nor Sarah Mohd Rashid said: “We checked 140 Construction Personnel Registration cards which is provided by CIDB to industry workers but fortunately all possessed the cards.”
She added that workers without the card could be fine up to RM5,000, and their employers’ licence could be suspended.
