KUALA KANGSAR: National harmony is being jeopardised due to political competition, warns Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.
“There are some political leaders who become vain after winning, while some who lose become vengeful,” the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong said in his speech at Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah’s (Usas) 11th convocation ceremony here yesterday.
“Those who win should have humility,” said Sultan Nazrin, adding that those who lost should “accept what had been determined by the Almighty”.
Sultan Nazrin, who is also the Perak Ruler, reminded the people and their leaders not to mastermind provocations that could ignite hate and hostility among people of various races and religions.
He said the wisdom of Malaysia’s founders in developing the country and uniting the people should be continued so that this peaceful, harmonious and prosperous nation could be passed on to future generations.
“There are countries in conflict – to an extent that some become destroyed – due to disputes caused by differences in sects and religions.
“Some are separated because of regional autonomy demands and there are also those who kill because of differences in political ideology.
“Malaysia has all the components that can stir a conflict, but the past leaders chose not to be in conflict,” Sultan Nazrin pointed out.
He also advised the Usas graduates to use their knowledge to become rational-minded people and not to let their minds be easily poisoned to stir disputes based on emotions.
“Avoid being used by shallow-minded people,” he said.
The Sultan also congratulated the graduates and expressed his appreciation to the family members who supported them.
The Usas convocation ceremony saw 1,303 graduates receiving their degree and diploma scrolls. — Bernama
