Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
IPOH: A secondary school student was killed when she was strangled by an electric cable wire which fell on her while she was riding pillion at Kilometre 5, Jalan Bota Kiri-Tanjung Blanja, about 70 kilometres from here, yesterday.
Nurul Huda Ashira Abdullah, 16, from Bota Kanan died at the scene.
Her body was sent to Changkat Melintang Hospital for postmortem.
Perak Tengah district police chief Supt Zainal Abdullah said in the 5 pm incident the victim was on a Honda EX5 driven by her friend Aida Safira Idris, 15, heading for Bota from Parit.
“It was raining heavily and on reaching the spot the cable wire suddenly snapped and fell.
“The motorcyclist tried to avoid the falling cable wire but it landed on the pilion rider strangling her,” he said when contacted here today.
Zainal said the motorcyclist escaped with minor injuries and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act 1987.
