Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
They are entering the country via the republic instead of direct flights from
Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur.
<p>Immigration has uncovered this new tactic whereby the illegal migrants board
Dhaka- Singapore-Kuala Lumpur flights to avoid the extra surveillance normally
mounted for Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur flights.</p>
<p>The department’s enforcement director, Datuk Ishak Mohamed, said this
was how the 125 Bangladeshis arrested last month for having false visas arrived
in the country.</p>
<p>"Syndicates have changed their tactics because they realise that Immigration
officers have been successful in nabbing illegal Bangladeshi workers on the
direct flights between Dhaka and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport,"
he said yesterday.</p>
<p>All foreign workers arriving in the country are required to arrive at KLIA.</p>
<p>Ishak said that the syndicates charged each Bangla- deshi between RM15,000
and RM18,000 for passage to Malaysia.
