Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
"I have also asked the MHA to detail safety measures to be taken in the
area.
<p>"Ministry secretary-general Datuk Syed Jamal Syed Jaafar will visit the
site of the incident and report back to me," he said in a statement.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Khor Chap Jen, a director of the developer, Bandar Setia Alam Sdn
Bhd, said nine workers were working on the panels of the interchange when a
section of the flyover collapsed.</p>
<p>"The workers were on top of the panel stressing the cables to connect
the eight panels when it suddenly collapsed.</p>
<p>"At this point, we do not know what caused the collapse," he said.</p>
<p>In Klang, the MTUC urged employers to ensure the safety of all workers at all
times.</p>
<p>"It’s up to the employers to monitor workplace safety," said its
president, Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud.
