Roundtable Discussions on Labour Law Reform with Migrant Workers.
MTUC in collaboration with the Solidarity Center successfully organized a roundtable discussion on the LLR with migrant workers in Ipoh, Perak today.
The program was conducted by Bro Zul Thye, MTUC Project Coordinator and Bro Rudy Rusly, CEUPM General Secretary / General Council Member. Also present at the Solidarity Center were Mr David Welsh and Mr. Wilibrordus Balawala. A total of 26 migrant workers attended the program consisting of 22 male workers from Nepal, 2 female workers from Nepal and 2 female workers from Indonesia.
The purpose of this program is to explain to migrant workers what are the amendments to the Malaysian labor law that protects all workers. In addition, we would also like to hear what their concerns are as well as their suggestions and views on the amendments to the Malaysian Labor Laws.
Mr David Welsh in his opening address noted that cooperation between the Solidarity Center (SC) with MTUC has been ongoing for over 20 years. MTUC is serious in helping all workers in Malaysia who are exploited and those who are pressured by legislation that does not help workers and SC will support MTUC in their work.
The discussion today was very interesting as the participants did not stop to ask questions and give their opinions along with facilitators.
The program was continued with a presentation from Bro Zul Thye and assisted by Bro Rudy. Details of the functions of the MTUC in assisting all workers are described, including the provisions of the Employment Act 1955, the Industrial Relations Act 1967 and the Trade Unions Act 1959, which protect migrant workers. The benefits of SOCSO and Minimum Wage are also presented. The whole program is well received and they hope it will continue for their fellow colleague.
