Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PETALING JAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has decided not to take any further action against the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), after announcing that its temporary suspension slapped on the union has been lifted.
In a letter to the union, RoS said it was satisfied with MTUC’s explanation on issues raised by RoS.
RoS also instructed MTUC to hold its Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC), saying the union would be monitored to ensure it was held in accordance with the MTUC constitution.
“The RoS decision to revoke the suspension and remove the cloud of deregistration which hung over MTUC over the past three weeks is a vindication of MTUC’s stand that it had carried out its functions responsibly and would be able to provide satisfactory explanations to RoS queries,” MTUC president Abdul Halim Mansor and secretary-general J Solomon said in a statement.
In December, RoS, saying they had investigated a complaint on mismanagement in MTUC last July, suspended the union and gave it 30 days to explain why it should not be deregistered.
The suspension came amid a war of words between MTUC and the human resources ministry over the Labour Laws Reform (LLR) Bill, which the union said was being bulldozed without consultation with stakeholders.
MTUC, the oldest national union representing workers, has some 500,000 members represented through its affiliate organisations across industries and sectors.
The union recognised by the Malaysian government, is part of the National Joint Labour Advisory Council, and makes representations for the International Labour Organisation.
