Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi has spoken to several industry players and stakeholders in Malaysia to increase the protection and care of the nation’s migrant workers here.
According to Indonesian daily Jakarta Post, Retno had last week visited shelters of the republic’s troubled citizens, and the Indonesian consulate in Penang and Johor Baru to raise concerns over the protection of the workers.
“I have asked the management to end the problems that occur in Malaysia and I will also convey that to the Malaysian government.
“Meanwhile, I have communicated with the relevant ministers to look for solutions to the upstream problems,” Retno was quoted as saying in a statement during the weekend.
The news report said there were about 360,000 Indonesian workers registered at the Indonesian consulate in Johor and roughly 80,000 from the consulate in Penang.
A majority of them, the report said, worked in oil palm plantations, construction and manufacturing sectors.
It also noted that Retno was the first Indonesian foreign minister to have visited the country since 1969.
