Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
This is because they also receive fixed allowances, a statement from the Public
Service Department said.
<p>It said the RM480 basic salary is drawn by cooks attached to the civil service.</p>
<p>The statement was issued in response to a report in the New Straits Times yesterday
which said 200,000 civil servants from the support group with a basic pay of
RM480 were asking for a salary hike.</p>
<p>Head of the department’s corporate communications unit, Hasniah Rashid,
said there had been five salary revisions and adjustments since 1992.</p>
<p>"Under the salary scheme for cooks, the minimum wage is RM480.85 and maximum
basic salary is RM1,231.05.</p>
<p>"However, the minimum drawn salary for those under this category is RM780.85
while the maximum wage is RM1,501.05," Hasniah said.</p>
<p>She said since 1992, those earning a minimum wage in this category had received
an increase of 48 per cent while those at the top of the scale had obtained
an increment of 71 per cent.</p>
<p>Hasniah said there were 4,008 civil servants under this category.</p>
<p>Omar Osman, who is Cuepacs deputy president, had said the salaries of the lowest
paid group of civil servants had not been reviewed for 16 years.</p>
<p>They included hospital attendants, drivers, gardeners and general workers.
