Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The flood situation has improved drastically in most part of the affected areas in Peninsular Malaysia and the evacuees are returning to their empty homes. Though the delivery system in the flood management system, supported by the government machineries, private sector employers, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and community in general has played a vital role in helping the flood victims, nevertheless evacuees are struggling to put their lives back to track.
Rebuilding their house back and purchasing the basic needs of household is not easy especially to the lower income group of employees. Therefore, Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) is urging the private sector community (Employers) to go beyond their formal obligation by providing interest free loans to their staff in addition to what has been provided thus far.
In challenging times, employers must be proactive in easing their workers financial burden. It is a step forward for nation building.
