Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
GEORGE TOWN: A businessman who incurred medical costs of RM178,000 after he was admitted to a private hospital for pneumonia has been sued after he failed to settle the remaining RM97,000 bill.
The suit by the private hospital in Penang named N. Ponnusamy, 45, and his son P. Nirmal Kumara, 22, a college student, as defendants in the case which has been fixed to be heard on April 22 at a magistrate’s court here.
In the hospital’s statement of claim, it was stated that the hospital admitted Ponnusamy after being informed that he had medical insurance.
They said the son had also signed a Guarantee of Payment on the day his father was admitted for treatment rendered from May 23, 2015, to June 24, 2015, which amounted to RM178,344.45.
The hospital only received RM64,525.47 from the insurance company, and RM16,300 from the father and son.
The hospital is seeking the remaining RM97,518.98, interests, costs and other reliefs deemed suitable by the court.
In their defence filed by lawyer S. Raveentharan on March 2, the father and son said the hospital failed to inform them when the medical cards exceeded the limit.
Ponnusamy said he was in a critical condition then and had no knowledge that his son was asked to sign as the guarantor.
He claimed that his son was only 19 then and could be under undue influence to sign due to his medical condition.
At a press conference, Raveentharan said he hoped to highlight the issue since the patients using insurance cards might encounter a similar problem.
