Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The system tracks the registration of a worker in his home country from the
moment he applies for a work permit and visa there, until his arrival at the
Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

After workers apply in Bangladesh, the Immigration Department in Putrajaya
approves their visas and issues them to the workers upon positive identification
when they arrive at the airport.

“The system ensures that the worker who arrives and receives the visa
is the same person as the one who applied in Bangladesh.

“With this system, workers don’t need to go to the Malaysian High
Commission in Dhaka,” Immigration enforcement director Datuk Ishak Mohamed
said.

The online system helps Immigration track the validity period of the workers’
stay in Malaysia more systematically, he added.
