Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Never again. This is the position taken by many Indonesian workers, who were rescued by the authorities yesterday from an allegedly exploitative bird’s nest factory in Klang when asked if they would return to Malaysia to work.
“Never here again, InsyaAllah! After this, I will look for work closer to home,” said Tyas Weningsih Putri from Kendal, a district in Central Java.
“I am so grateful. I have no words to describe my happiness,” said Tyas as she joined the row of workers assembled outside the Maxim Birdnest factory after a multi-agency raid that led to the arrest of factory owner Albert Tei and three other staff.
