Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) had today called on the 14 million workers in Malaysia to vote for Pakatan Harapan candidates in 14th General Election (GE14) to prove to the government that workers are key to the country’s economy and should never be ignored.
MTUC secretary general J Solomon said in a statement today workers here want a government, which can give them equal respect so that workers can have an equitable share in the wealth of the nation.
“Let’s give Pakatan Harapan an opportunity to serve Malaysians as a majority ruling party for five years. If they do not serve the workers, we can rise again to change them in the next five years.
“In this way no government will be indispensable and will not demonstrate arrogance, inconsiderate and corrupt practices as they will be reminded that they will be voted out by the population if they do not perform responsibly,” Solomon said ahead of GE14’s polling day tomorrow.
According to Solomon, Pakatan Harapan candidates have proven themselves to be good governors for the people in the states of Penang and Selangor.
