Referring to a report in The Star dated August 8, 2016, the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) urge the Government to immediately publicly make known its policy regarding the recruitment of foreign workers as the employers’ federation claimed that they are in confused situation by the current policy.
MTUC is also in a similar opinion as stated by the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) that it was time for the Government to make clear its policy on new hiring foreign workers. As stated by the MEF, we too feel’s that as a matter of national interest, an official announcement must be made as soon as possible so everyone is clear.
We request the Government will have a meeting with all the stakeholders especially with the MEF and MTUC to explain the current policy on foreign workers. A single clear policy on employment of foreign workers is vital for the industry and the country in longer run.
It is undeniable that the MTUC had stated its disagreement with extreme dependence on foreign workers. The country should move forward from depending on foreign workers. The industry and employers should work together with Government to reduce dependence on foreign workers.
In this case, MTUC had received information that foreign workers continue to arrives and the number is alarming. MTUC’s hope that the Home Ministry could clarify this matter and ensure that no discrimination against foreign workers were brought to this country.
The absence of a clear policy is not good for Malaysia’s image and reputation both at domestic and international arena. The Government must come with a clear policy to avoid confusion among all the parties involved and at the same time pave way to reduce the use of foreign workers.
The government, especially the Home Ministry must give priority to a clear policy in this matter. MTUC is willing to share our expertise and cooperation with the Government, and all relevant ministries.
