Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Its president, Syed Shahir Syed
Mohamud, said the MTUC was confident the fund for the pension would be available
in view of the country’s strong financial position, and if the government reduced
unnecessary spending.

Speaking at a Press conference here, he said advanced
countries like the United States and Australia had long introduced old-age pension
for their poor senior citizens.

Syed Shahir said the congress would send
a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi next week, proposing
that the government consider paying RM300 a month in old-age pension to poor Malaysians
aged above 60.

The memorandum will also propose that the pensionable age
of government employees be extended to 60 years as proposed by Cuepacs earlier.
