Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
MTUC Sarawak secretary Andrew Lo said although top executives and senior managers
in the private sector were better paid than government employees, those in lower
ranks had lagged.
<p>"They (lower rank remployees) do not even get any living allowance,"
said said Tuesday.</p>
<p>Citing an example, Lo said the Sarawak Timber Association had confirmed that
there were timber workers who earned RM12 a day, which was below the state’s
poverty level.</p>
<p>In welcoming the salary increment for civil servants, Lo said this would motivate
them to increase their productivity and improve the government’s delivery system.</p>
