Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
MTUC president Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud said it was long overdue because the
cost of living had increased rapidly over the past few years.

“Nevertheless, we are happy for them and urge the private sector to use
the Government’s salary increment as a benchmark to raise the wages of
private sector workers, especially those earning below the poverty income bracket.

Syed Shahir said that according to the Government, the new gross lowest salary
of a civil servant would be RM1,024.15 per month, way above the poverty line,
which is RM691 per month.

“In the private sector, millions of workers are still earning RM400 to
RM500 a month,” he said.
