Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Its secretary-general G.Rajasegaran said that MTUC would oppose any condition
in the FTA which affects the rights, benefits and job opportunities of its one
million members.
<p>Speaking at a DeepaRaya Open House, he said the Human Resources Ministry had
informed the MTUC about the FTA but the full details had not been given to the
congress.</p>
<p>He said the interest of the workers should come first and the Government should
hold talks with the MTUC so that the rights of workers would not be affected.</p>
<p>> The Siamese community in Kelantan has urged the police to act against
foreign bogus monks soliciting donations from the public, reported <i>Tamil
Nesan</i>.</p>
<p>Kelantan Siamese Community chief Ye Sat said complaints had been received that
foreigners dressed as monks, mostly from Nepal and Thailand, had been soliciting
donations from the public which went against Buddhist beliefs.</p>
<p>> Vegetable farmers from Cameron Highlands hope that the Government would
look into the problems affecting their livelihood, reported <i>Malaysia Nanban</i>.</p>
<p>Their concerns are with the escalating prices of fertilisers, pesticides and
the cost of living.</p>
<p>Many farmers had also requested for the titles to the land that they had been
working on for many years.</p>
<p>They also said the banks had rejected their applications for agricultural loans.
