Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) is demanding an explanation from Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran as to why its secretary general J. Solomon was removed from the Socso board of directors.
MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor said it was strange that Kulasegaran claimed it was the Socso board itself that requested Solomon’s removal.
According to Halim, this was because Solomon himself had confirmed that no Socso board meeting had been held where a decision was taken to endorse Solomon’s removal.
“In fact, there was never any discussion on Solomon’s conduct at Socso board meetings. Therefore, it is very strange for the minister to claim that it was the Socso board which pushed for Solomon’s removal, ” he said in a statement issued Wednesday (Jan 22).
Halim said a detailed and transparent explanation by Kulasegaran’s office could allay fears and suspicion that Solomon’s removal was done unilaterally and motivated by personal agenda.
At the same time, Halim said MTUC was made aware by Solomon that he had displeased the Socso board chairman during a board meeting in May last year.
As a result, the Socso board chairman wrote to Kulasegaran, asking that Solomon be removed from the board, claimed Halim.
“However, based on Solomon’s briefing to me and upon listening to the official audio clip of said meeting, MTUC did not find anything untoward in Solomon’s conduct in presenting MTUC’s stand at the meeting.
“Indeed, there was no action taken against him by the minister then. As such, it is very unusual and unjust for that complaint (by the Socso chairman) to be used months later as an excuse to remove Solomon from the Socso board.”
“MTUC is strongly convinced that the facts will show that Solomon was removed from the Socso board unfairly and without justification. As such, he should be reinstated as Socso board member without delay.”
Halim also said Kulasegaran must not remain silent on the issue.
He added that Solomon had previously sought Kulasegaran’s explanation on Jan 6 and 11, following his removal last Dec 31.
“Sadly, Kulasegaran has thus far failed to explain his decision, ” he added.
