Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUCHING: A delegation of Malaysia Trades Union Congress (MTUC) leaders led by MTUC Sarawak chairman Mohd Ibrahim Hamid paid Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem a courtesy call at his office at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here yesterday.
MTUC, in a press statement, said their purpose was to brief the chief minister on several issues affecting workers and the unions in Sarawak, particularly on the need for employers to respect and recognise the role of trade unions in the economic development of the state.
Adenan, on the other hand, said he was concerned about several issues, including the restructuring of Malaysia Airlines, the continuous need of foreign workers in the state, and the need to have a robust trade union movement to be in line with the objective of a high-income nation.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim also brought up their proposal to set up a state-level Tripartite Council comprising representatives from the state government, employers, and trade unions so that issues can be deliberated in a holistic manner and long term solutions to be found.
The MTUC delegation also expressed their strong support for Adenan in his efforts to stem out illegal logging as well as his move to promote a clean government with high integrity and ethics.
