53 unionised workers of Malaysian Zoological Society have been patiently waiting for their workers’ quarters since 2001 and the numerous inquiries made by the Union leaders then has gone into deaf ears of the authorities.
It has been reported that the former government has made available to the Malaysian Zoological Society (MZS) an amount of RM1.6 million as far back as year 2001 to facilitate housing.
The salary of one worker who has been working for 20 long years is merely RM1,800.00 and housing is an essential need for these workers more so when they are poorly paid.
The Union is concerned whether the funds allocated for workers quarters is still available or pilfered any interested parties and therefore, sought the intervention of MTUC. MTUC has written to the President of the MZS and there has been no response to date.
It has been also reported that in 2013 a report was submitted to the former Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib on the allegation of corruption in various forms and abuse of power by certain council members of MZS which too has been ignored and no action taken.
Therefore, MTUC is also concerned on the availability of the RM1.6 million and as to why it has not provided quarters to the workers having held on to the fund for 17 years, which has obviously would have had a cost to the government.
MTUC would be taking up this matter with the MOF to seek its intervention for the appeal of the workers for their quarters and in respect of the RM1.6 million granted to MZS in 2001 for the purpose of providing quarters to workers.
