Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PADANG TERAP: The Education Ministry has approved 2,825 transfer applications by teachers nationwide for the June 2017 session.
Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the approval was 13.8 per cent from the total 20,470 applications where 11,766 came from teachers in primary school and the remaining were from secondary school.
He said 80 per cent of the approved applications (2,261) involved cases where the teachers were separated from their spouses.
Among other reasons cited by teachers were chronic illnesses, safety threats and long service tenure as well as joint application by spouses.
“Three major factors taken into consideration when processing the request to transfer between states were post vacancies, service priority and optional need.
“Only a small number of applications were approved for this session as it is already mid-year and many teachers are involved with major examinations namely Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), PT3 and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
“For those teachers who had their application rejected, there will be another opening in October and December,” he said in a press conference at Padang Terap District Education Office here today.
