KOTA KINABALU: The government’s efforts to ensure that the country’s unemployment problem is minimised can be seen through the 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) organised nationwide to help youths secure jobs.
The fifth edition of SL1M in Sabah, for instance, was held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) here on Saturday and Sunday to allow the youth in the state to find jobs without having to travel far.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said SL1M eased the difficulties faced by graduates in finding jobs that matched their skills and education.
“We can see that the fifth edition of SL1M, which is taking place here in Sabah, received a phenomenal response from the people, that shows that government’s efforts to help the youth get jobs were well received by the people.
“In the past, the people were required to go out by themselves to look for jobs. However, through SL1M, we go to the grassroots to help people find jobs.
“We help them by matching jobs that suit them and ease the application process,” he said after launching the state-level SL1M.
Rahman added that SL1M did not only help reduce the employment rate in the country but also reduced the poverty rate.
The state-level SL1M programme offered about 6,000 jobs and drew more than 15,000 youth.
Various activities, including talks, exhibitions and performances by local artistes, were lined up throughout the two-day event.
The artistes included Faizal Tahir, Zero, Stacy, Marsha Milan Londoh, Ara Johari, Andi Bernadee and Farish Aziz and Samantha Miles.
SL1M was introduced in June 2011 under the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, with the collaboration of government-linked companies (GLCs) and private companies.
Until December last year, more than 140,000 youth benefited from the programme, while this year, it will benefit more than 25,000 graduates.
