Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
It is learnt that Bukit Aman has completed its investigations into the missing
funds last year and has forwarded the findings to the Attorney-General’s
chambers.

The man will be charged at the Jalan Raja Sessions court here.

Sources said the Attorney-General’s chambers was satisfied with the investigations
and found there was sufficient evidence to charge the man under Section 409
of the Penal Code for Criminal Breach of Trust.

The missing money created a furore among the 8,000 members of the union after
a member lodged a police report. The union’s external auditors had said
in December 2003 that they could not account for RM1mil in the union’s
accounts.

The money was allegedly invested in a non-existent company. The company is
said to be involved in the property and construction industry. However, a check
with the Registrar of Companies revealed that the company was not a registered
entity.

This is the second major court action against a high-ranking union leader involving
CBT.

On Dec 8, former National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) secretary-general
K. Sanmugam, 58, claimed trial to a charge of committing criminal breach of
trust involving 100,000 share units of Kuantan Flour Mill, said to be worth
RM1.25mil, nine years ago.
