Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The home affairs minister, Mohamad Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, says an alternative
source is needed as Indonesians are increasingly shunning Malaysia because of
its low pay rates.

The New Straits Times reports the minister as saying that he will discuss the
labour shortage with his Indonesian counterpart in Jakarta later this month.

Last year, Indonesia and Malaysia signed an accord on the treatment of domestic
workers to protect them from abuse, but no minimum wage was stipulated.

Malaysia employs around 350,000 foreign maids, 95 per cent of them Indonesians.
