Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR: Two major highways in the city will be closed this Sunday for the Standard Chartered Marathon 2017.
The Ampang-KL Elevated Highway will be closed between 1.30am and 10.30am while the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway will be closed between 2.30am and 11.30am.
There will also be closures and detours affecting 24 roads, including Jalan Raja along Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Damansara, and parts of the MRR2.
City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the road closures will start from 4am until about 11.30am.
“This is to accommodate the marathon and clean up efforts after the run,” he said.
Road users are advised to take public transportation such as the LRT and MRT to get into the city centre during that time.
He said the trains will operate from 2am to accommodate runners and the public.
ACP Mohd Nadzri said there are 14 alternative routes to go into the city centre including Jalan Syed Putra, Jalan Bukit Bintang along Lot 10 and Jalan Tun Razak.
Waze users will also be redirected to these routes.
He said about 350 officers from the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Division will be deployed to help control traffic and are advised road users to heed instructions of traffic officials.
More than 30,000 runners will be participating in the run with over 8,000 expected to complete the 42km route.
